Evan B Harris
When you look at a painting by Evan B. Harris you’re supposed to wonder what time it came from. Each painting is beaten, brushed, sanded, and polished to make it old before its time. The images he portrays allude to a past mythology, the fables and stories you heard as a child. They are inspired by the backwoods of Oregon where he grew up and the strange dreams that that landscape evoked. As an adolescent, he spent countless hours mining the depths of his imagination and mapping what he found there on the pages in front of him. And though his skills as an artist have grown with the years, he claims his dreams haven’t changed all that much.
Harris has never had any formal training and proudly touts this fact. He believes it gives him the ability to create on his own terms. The hours and hours he spent drawing as a child seemed to be more than enough preparation and he has grown to work with a variety of mediums: broken boards, oil and acrylic paints, charcoal pastels, plastic resin, melted waxes. His work has been shown at galleries all over the West coast and he has done illustrations for magazines and album covers.
